Talk Night

EventBase · 1280 Homer St, Vancouver

A night of talks from our community! We are looking for speakers - if you’re interested in giving a talk on anything interesting to a group of Pythonistas, please fill out our form: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfeyv-SurQYWbIde3hetbCR8OFuM-ZvVo9tjoUA9V7G48Joqg/viewform We love first-time speakers and shorter talks!

Ideas for talks include: a walkthrough of a problem you solved recently, a demo of a project you’re working on, a summary of your favourite Python library, a guide to how you got to your current technical skill level (including beginner!), a discussion of how software affects your field or anything else you might want to hear about! Talks can be as short as 5 mins or as long as 30 mins.

Scheduled talks: The Serverless Birdnest A short story about a big mistake, plus an intro to Python-Flask and some nifty AWS services. Presented by Tay Frost, the unprofessional cloud lady (@awildtaybird)

The Mood Machine - Building an Emotion Detection system in Python This project teaches a computer about how a person is feeling from their facial expressions. Presented by Tanushri Chakravorty, who works on developing computer vision algorithms and applying machine learning to computer vision problems. Her previous work involves developing imaging applications for embedded devices. While not working she loves travelling and listening to music. (@tanushri_c, www.tanushri3.wordpress.com)

Open source in Science: How contributability, transparency, and other open source practices can revolutionize scientific research by Lisa N. Cao

We have dinner delivered before the talks, so do come hungry for both food and talks!
