PyLadies Vancouver and R-Ladies Vancouver are teaming up for a night of lightning talks: short talks from speakers in both communities. Come for a fast, friendly mix of Python and R, ideas, tools, and stories, all in bite-sized form. We’ll be at VISST from 6 to 8 PM.

We’re looking for speakers 🎤

This is a call for lightning talks, and we’d love to hear from you. We’re looking for short presentations, 5 to 15 minutes long, from speakers in either community, PyLadies or R-Ladies. It’s the lowest-pressure way to get on stage.

A Practical Introduction to Generative AI and Large Language Models, by Daniel Chen: how LLMs actually work and how to use them effectively in Python-based data science workflows.

Hands-on Intro to aiohttp with Mariatta.

Asyncio is a relatively new feature in Python, with the async and await syntaxes only recently became proper keywords in Python 3.7. Asyncio allows you to write asynchronous programs in Python. In this tutorial, we’ll introduce you to an asyncio web library called aiohttp.

aiohttp is a library for building web client and server using Python and asyncio. We’ll introduce you to several key features of aiohttp; including routing, session handling, templating, using middlewares, connecting to database, and making HTTP GET/POST requests. We’ll provide best practises in building your aiohttp application, as well as how to write tests for your application.

In this workshop, we’ll explore various types of recommendation systems, and learn how they’re implemented in Python. Skill Level: Intermediate To get the most out of this workshop, you’ll want to be already comfortable with Python basics. You do not need any prior experience with Pandas or any other libraries.

Want to know how Spotify, Amazon, and Netflix create personalized recommendations for their users? In this workshop, we will explore various types of recommendation systems, and learn how they are implemented in Python. We will use the MovieLens dataset to build our own recommendation system from scratch (http://grouplens.org/datasets/movielens/).

Skill level: Intermediate. You should be comfortable with Python and know how to use libraries such as numpy, pandas, and scikit-learn.

Minimal setup: Bring your laptop if you want to participate in the tutorial. We’ll be using Python 3.6, Jupyter Lab, and several Python packages including numpy, pandas, scikit-learn, matplotlib, and seaborn. If you don’t have these dependencies installed locally, you can use Google Colaboratory - a free Jupyter notebook environment that runs in the cloud (http://colab.research.google.com/).

Tutorial: Face Detection with Python and OpenCV

Ever wanted to learn to do face detection with Python? This tutorial will cover how to use the OpenCV package to work with images and video. Whether you’re a complete beginner or a total Python fiend, this tutorial is for you!

Attendees should bring a laptop with an internal camera or a webcam since this tutorial will include plenty of hands-on practice. If you don’t have a computer, you’ll definitely be able to find a buddy to pair with. Help will be available installing OpenCV with the Anaconda python package manager.

Python Packaging Workshop

In this workshop lead by Brett Cannon, we will learn all about Python packaging: what is it for, what are the formats, what tools are available, and what the future holds. We’ll go through the process of publishing a package using flit. Bring your own laptop to follow along.

All skill levels welcome!

The workshop is beginner friendly. Being able to edit and save a text file is all you need. We will also use the command line. All the commands will be provided so you can follow along.

Intro to Testing and Test Automation in Python

This is a repeat of the testing tutorial we presented in October. We’ve made a few tweaks to the format, with more focus on pytest and less on system testing.

Please bring a laptop if you can. When we’re closer to the date we’ll give you more info on the requirements (still trying to iron out the setup portion of the tutorial!), but for now:

Setup your github SSH key
Install python 2 or 3 with pip and virtualenv
