From Curiosity to Cloud: A Hands-on Python Workshop With Linda Lee

Better late than never! This recap of our June 2025 workshop took a little longer to publish than we’d hoped — but the event was too good not to share.
For our June 2025 meetup, PyLadies Vancouver hosted From Curiosity to Cloud, a hands-on workshop led by Linda Lee. Attendees brought their laptops and worked through deploying a Python application — complete with LLM integration — to the cloud using Defang .
It was a packed, practical session: a little bit of career inspiration, followed by everyone getting their hands dirty shipping a real app to the cloud.
Thank you to our speaker Linda Lee for sharing both her story and her expertise. Linda took us on her journey from university hackathons to contributing at Defang, showing how real-world experiences have shaped her path. Then we learned by doing, as Linda walked the room through the key steps of deploying a Python application with LLM (Large Language Model) integration straight to the cloud using Defang — a hands-on experience that added to everyone’s repertoire of AI and cloud skills.

Linda Lee is a Computer Science (BSc) student with hands-on experience developing cutting-edge software at Defang Software Labs. She has four years of experience as a coding instructor, teaching programming languages — including Python — to school-aged children in Vancouver, and is passionate about inspiring the next generation of coders. Driven by curiosity, she actively engages in hackathons, tech events, and Women in Computer Science (WiCS) activities.

The evening was structured to take everyone from curiosity to a deployed app: after a PyLadies introduction, Linda led the room through deploying a Python + LLM application to the cloud with Defang, and we wrapped up with community updates and PyCon US swag.
The workshop went really well! A highlight was the quiz Linda built into the session to keep everyone listening, engaged, and paying attention — a fun touch that made the hands-on learning even more effective.
Thank you to Z-Space Arts + Technology Society for hosting us at 505 Hamilton St, Suite 301, Vancouver. Z-Space is a community-oriented creative technology space, and it was the perfect home for a hands-on evening of building.
This event also doubled as a fundraiser for PyLadiesCon. While we didn’t end up selling any tote bags this time, we did share lots of conference swag that Mariatta brought back from PyCon US — and a big thank you to everyone who donated!
We’re excited to announce our next meetup on July 6, 2026! We’ll be fundraising and selling PyLadies tote bags again, and Mariatta still has plenty of swag to share from other conferences. RSVP on Luma — we’d love to see you there.
We’re starting to transition to Luma ! From now on, we’ll be handling RSVPs through Luma. We’ll still announce our events on Meetup , but we’ll point you to sign up on Luma instead. You can also subscribe to our Luma calendar to get our upcoming events straight into your calendar app.
